Engage STEM Students with Dynamic Models

Phenomena are dynamic. The tools we use to model them should be, too.

Start exploring models of STEM concepts with your middle or high school classes today!

Dynamic concepts need dynamic media

Students have so much lived experience with math and science concepts. But they struggle to recognize these ideas on a static page. Bring STEM concepts to life with interactive models that let students discover relationships and connect them to their daily lives.

Make modeling a regular practice

Modeling is a critical scientific practice and 21st century skill. With Phenomena, students can practice modeling in as little as five minutes. Try using an experience to introduce or review a topic.

Engage every student in STEM

Phenomena’s visual, interactive approach engages kids and gets them excited about ideas that they would likely have passed over in a textbook. Phenomena is fun because the ideas are fun.

Teachers love Phenomena

“I love using Phenomena's Experiences in my classroom. They are great as both a review of information or as a preview of new topics. My students enjoy the interactive and visual aspects of the Experiences, and I love the depth of information presented in them.”

Morgen Perez
MS Science Teacher
Huntsville, AL

Students are excited about moving through advanced concepts at their own speed. When we use the Experiences, students talk to each other and make suggestions, which allows students to call each other in and engage with the material in a communal way!

Ellie Meyer
MS Science Teacher
Boston, MA

Simulations are the best tool for learning and Phenomena provides the opportunity for students to engage with instructional simulations. The Experiences give students a concrete format of what it means to think like a scientist and do scientific work.”

We love STEM and want to share that love with ALL students. We want to give every student the chance to succeed in STEM, because every student is deserving of success.

FAQ

  • Every child grows up learning about math and science through their interactions with the world around them. Yet when they encounter these subjects in school, it’s often through textbooks that make it hard to connect a child’s dynamic lived experiences to static text and images. We developed Phenomena to help every child feel that STEM concepts are within their reach and fun to learn.

Phenomena supports kids whether they’re learning independently or with a class, at home or in school. It helps kids explore new ideas and concepts in math and science, whether or not these subjects are part of any particular curriculum. With Phenomena, kids see that math and science aren’t separate subjects, they’re languages that help us describe the world.

  • We developed Phenomena for ages 10-14, but we quickly saw that these experiences excite learners of any age. We’ve seen kids from 8 - 18+ learn independently with Phenomena, and we’ve developed plenty of experiences featuring topics like integrals that are found in high school or even college courses. With Phenomena, kids (and adults!) can explore patterns and relationships to build understanding at multiple levels, with or without layering on the math or variables used to express these concepts.

  • Phenomena is not an app, and there is nothing to download. Our experiences are hosted on our website and can be opened in any web browser.

  • Because they are web-based, Phenomena experiences can be used on any device that runs a web browser, including mobile phones. However, for the best experience, we recommend engaging with Phenomena on a larger screen.

  • There are a lots of ways that teachers use Phenomena in their classroom:

    • As “Do Now” at the start of class

    • As a front-of-class demo

    • As a virtual lab

    • As a replacement for a reading

    • As a homework assignment

    • As an extension activity

    • To differentiate and personalize instruction

Because Phenomena experiences are bite-sized and make it quick and easy for kids to understand topics, they can fit in anywhere!
