Logic Gates (Computer Science)

Topics: logic gates, logical operators, logic circuits, Boolean values, inputs, outputs

Grades: 11-12

Duration to complete: 10-15 minutes

Learning outcome: Students will learn what logic gates are and how they represent logical operations. Students will use logic gates to transform Boolean inputs into outputs that accomplish a goal. Students will become familiar with Boolean logic and truth tables.

Intro for students: Why bother with logic gates?  They’re the basis of modern technology, including the screen you’re looking at!  Play with switches and predict logical outcomes to solve fun challenges.  Learn the truth behind truth tables.  We’re confident this experience will light up your day!

What makes this topic challenging for kids?

Boolean logic is unfamiliar to many students. The usefulness of Boolean logic and logic gates is not immediately apparent.

What’s our approach?

With our experience, students can ease into understanding Boolean logic through experimentation. With each switch flip, the visuals change so the result is immediately apparent. Intuition is built through recognition of cause and effect. Through snappy visuals and a simple interface that encourages experimentation, this experience will build intuition for Boolean logic in no time!
