Overview

Link to Experience: https://play.phenomena.app/player/PopvK2P4mIvtJL4VWC7u

Topics: math, geometry, trigonometry, triangles, pythagorean theorem

Grades: 6-8

Standards:

Duration to complete: 10-15 minutes

Learning outcome: Students will understand what the Pythagorean Theorem is, and how to apply it to solve for the third side length of a right triangle.

In the Classroom

Pre-Experience (Things to Look Out For):

  • What is a right triangle?

  • What name do we give the diagonal side of a right triangle? How about the other two sides?

Post-Experience (Things to Think About):

  • Can you name a few other scenarios where the Pythagorean Theorem is important or useful?’

  • If you want to use the Pythagorean Theorem, what conditions do you need to satisfy first?

  • How else do you think the Pythagorean Theorem could be useful in geometry? Could it be used indirectly to calculate side lengths in a non-right triangle?
