Slope Intercept (Algebra)

At a glance:

Topics: Linear equations, slope intercept formula, graphing, slope, y intercept

Grades: 6-9

Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.EE.B.6

Duration to complete: 10-15 minutes

Learning outcome: Students will learn how to visualize linear equations, understand slope and y intercept, and manipulate slope intercept form to model real life objects.

Intro for students: Face a famous formula head-on in Phenomena’s new Slope Intercept experience! Manipulate slope and Y intercept in real time to complete fun challenges. Mountains will be climbed, turtles will be saved… and equations will be linear. #slopeintercept #algebra #math #phenomena #phenomenalearning #turtle #mountainclimbing #linearequations

What makes this topic challenging for kids?

Many students struggle to connect the written form “y=mx+b” to a graphical representation of the equation. Many have trouble visualizing how the values of m and b affect the graph.

What’s our approach?

Our experience uses fun, interactive elements to help form connections between the written linear equation and the graph. Play with sliders to dynamically manipulate variables in the written equation. As the equation changes, the graph dynamically readjusts in kind. The student will see in real time how the slope and y intercept values are reflected in the graph. In addition, the experience presents real-world objects to contextualize the real-world applications of the formula.

Regardless of a student’s knowledge base, the Slope Intercept experience is fun and educational at all levels.
