Overview

Link to Experience: https://play.phenomena.app/player/1vbe2x7RBVmpW5ead6H8

Topics: math, algebra, graphing, systems of equations

Grades: 7-10

Standards:

Duration to complete: 10-15 minutes

Learning outcome: Students will be able to graph linear equations, find their intersection, and will understand that this intersection is the solution to the system of equations.

In the Classroom

Pre-Experience (Things to Look Out For):

  • Let’s recap some line graphing skills: what do m and b stand for in the equation y = mx + b ?

  • What is a system of equations?

  • How do you think you might solve a system of equations?

Post-Experience (Things to Think About):

  • When is there a solution to a system of equations? When is there not?

  • What can be said about lines that produce an infinite number of solutions?

  • What do you notice about parallel lines?

  • What sort of scenarios could a system of equations model?

  • How do you think this method could be used to solve a system of equations with more than two lines?
